VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is advancing its space capabilities with BEACONSAT, the nation’s inaugural military satellite and the biggest satellite ever developed domestically. This spacecraft is designed to monitor interference that impacts global navigation satellite systems from low Earth orbit, concentrating on jamming and spoofing activities related to services like GPS and Galileo. Austria plans to send the approximately 32-kilogram satellite into space using a Falcon 9 rocket in February 2027.

Officials have associated the project with Austria’s broader efforts on satellite navigation, communications, and space-based reconnaissance, which are guided by a military space strategy adopted in 2023 that outlines development objectives extending through 2035 and beyond.
European and Austrian technological collaboration defines the project
Led by GATE Space, the BEACONSAT initiative benefits from its propulsion system, structural components, and thermal management solutions. The Austrian firm, which emerged in 2022 as a TU Wien spin-off, specializes in spacecraft propulsion technology. Its engines have completed over 8,000 hot-fire tests under atmospheric and vacuum conditions. Additionally, the project received approximately 750,000 euros in Austrian public funding aimed at advancing technology development.
Several specialized companies contribute key systems for the satellite’s navigation monitoring mission. Graz-based IGASPIN provides technology aimed at detecting and analyzing interference impacting global navigation satellite systems. Danish firm Space Inventor supplies supplementary hardware, including the onboard computer. The European Space Agency supports this effort through its Marketplace program, which facilitates testing of commercially developed space systems in operational environments for technology demonstration missions.
Launching will mark Austria’s debut in military satellite operations
BEACONSAT’s primary focus is on collecting data related to interference, rather than armed capabilities or offensive functions. From orbit, it will observe signals to detect patterns indicative of jamming and spoofing activities. The Defence Ministry has indicated that the project’s budget contribution is around 1 million euros, based on information released in 2026. The mission is expected to commence after launch in 2027, functioning initially as a research and technology validation effort.
Austria anticipates that its first military satellite mission will begin with the February 2027 launch. SpaceX will deploy BEACONSAT into orbit aboard a Falcon 9 rocket, aligning with the announced launch plans.
